this 68-foot-high mound, which contains 54,000 cubic yards of earth,
indicate the Adena Indians built it sometime between 1000 B.C. and A.D.
100. With a circumference of nearly 900 feet at the base, the mound had
two burial vaults: one 8 feet from the top of the mound containing a
bark-covered skeleton, the other 36 feet down and surrounded by logs
but without any skeletal remains. Visitors to the mound can climb 116
steps to the top of this impressive earthwork for a splendid view of
the Miami Valley. A thirty-six-acre park encircles the mound, with
picnic tables, barbecue grills, and shelter houses.
